Novarama Nightmare Before Christmas

Brand Event · Barcelona · 2023

Nightmare Before Christmas themed corporate event for the Novarama team, a Barcelona-based video game studio. Company event with full art direction inspired by the Tim Burton universe.

The challenge

A team that builds worlds recognises instantly when a world is badly built.

The difficulty of producing a Christmas celebration for a creative video game studio is not budgetary or logistical. It is one of criteria. The Novarama team works with high-quality visual references throughout the year: concept art, art direction, production design, sound design. The collective perception of what is well produced and what is not is higher than in any other corporate client profile.

The Tim Burton concept added an additional layer of exigency: the Nightmare Before Christmas universe has a very specific palette, geometry, character vocabulary, and sonic atmosphere. Any reproduction that does not reach the level of visual coherence of the original reference will be read as a caricature of the universe, not as a homage. The production challenge was to build Burton's atmosphere in a real space without any element breaking the world's coherence.

Bacus's response

Full immersion: Burton arrives at the space before the team does.

Bacus designed the evening as world-building work, not as themed decoration. The difference between the two is that in the first all elements of the space form part of the same visual system, while in the second themed objects are added to a space that remains neutral. The operational decision was that when the Novarama team crossed the venue entrance, the Burton universe would already be built and operational: a chromatic palette of black, purple, and orange applied to the entire lighting of the space, gothic geometry in the structural decoration, music composed for the Burton universe from minute zero.

The space was divided into zones corresponding to the different worlds of the Nightmare Before Christmas universe: Halloweentown, the Christmas world, and the transition spaces. Each zone had its own sound design and its own lighting treatment, so that moving through the space was equivalent to traversing the universe. The catering was designed with names and presentations within the concept. The live music performed the original Danny Elfman repertoire in chamber versions.

The experience

The team enters and recognises the universe before anyone has explained it.

The arrival at the venue was designed without an explicit welcome or announcement of the theme: the Burton universe was visible from outside the space, with the chromatic palette, the lighting, and the music reaching the team before they crossed the entrance. The Novarama team, trained to read visual references instantly, identified the universe in the first seconds. That quick reading was the first signal that the production was at the level of the reference.

During the evening, movement through the different zones of the space generated natural conversations about the Burton universe — which film sequences each zone referenced, which version of the music was playing, how the lighting transitions had been built. For a team of animators and designers, that level of detail in the production is the equivalent of what a technically well-executed dish is for a kitchen team: you notice it without anyone having to explain it. The after-dinner extended until the team closed the space.

The result

Novarama's Christmas, produced at the level of the team celebrating it.

The evening closed with the most relevant internal indicator for a creative client: the team left talking about the production as if it had been a job well done, not as a party. That reading — that the event has criteria, that someone made real artistic direction decisions, that it is not a costume shop set — is what distinguishes a company evening for a highly demanding creative client from an evening that simply happened.

Novarama maintains an active relationship with Bacus for studio corporate events. The Nightmare Before Christmas commission is part of a series of annual celebrations produced by Bacus for the studio team, each with its own concept and specific artistic direction. The Novarama case catalogue in the Bacus archive documents the evolution of that relationship.

Frequently asked questions · Novarama Nightmare Before Christmas

What readers ask after this case.

  • A company Christmas party with a cinematic concept works when all elements of the space respond to the same visual system — lighting, music, decoration, catering, service team attire — and not only when themed objects are added to a neutral space. The difference between immersion and décor lies in the coherence between parts. Bacus produces themed events for Barcelona companies with full artistic direction, live music, and scene direction on the event day.

  • Yes. Bacus produces corporate Christmas celebrations for video game studios, production companies, creative agencies, and technology companies in Barcelona. The studio knows the creative guest profile — high exposure to entertainment references, direct perception of production quality — and designs each event from that premise. Concepts range from cinematic universes to curated gastronomic experiences or ambient installations.

  • A company Christmas event with live music includes artistic direction of the space, selection and contracting of the musical ensemble, repertoire coordination with the evening's script, technical audio production, dinner or cocktail catering, an active bar, and scene direction. Bacus produces this format for groups of twenty to five hundred attendees in Barcelona and the surrounding area, with turnkey production under a single client contact.

  • Its own artistic direction at a corporate Christmas event is justified from twenty people upward if the objective is for the event to be memorable for the team. Group size is not the factor that determines the event's quality: it is the coherence between concept and production. Bacus has produced Christmas events for groups of twenty people with the same level of artistic criteria as events of several hundred. The budget scales to the scale; the production standard does not.
