The chosen venue was Casa Batlló on Passeig de Gràcia. A building by Antoni Gaudí, declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site, one of the most visited pieces of Catalan Modernisme, and a cultural asset that any American investor recognises before landing. The editorial opportunity was immediate. So was the operational difficulty.
A UNESCO heritage venue imposes restrictions that admit no interpretation. Floor load capacity, room temperature, anchorage points, the building's architectural lighting regime, catering staff flow patterns, and the timetable of use compatible with the museum's daytime operations are boundary conditions that are not negotiated. Any proposal for scenography, technical assembly, or room service is evaluated first against those restrictions.
The editorial challenge added another layer. A premium wine tasting inside Gaudí competes with the building itself for the guest's attention. If the catering is executed as a standard company gala dinner, the venue swallows the evening and the tasting goes unnoticed. If it is executed as a standalone editorial piece, the building is relegated to background. The balance was demanding: make the tasting as elevated as Gaudí, and ensure Gaudí did not eclipse the tasting.
