MediaMarkt Festival

Convention · Sant Jordi Club, Barcelona · 2019

Corporate convention for MediaMarkt Spain at Sant Jordi Club, Barcelona. A continuation of the festival format for the retail network, following the award-winning Todos Queremos Todo project in 2018.

The challenge

A convention that repeats is a convention that measures itself against itself.

The editorial difficulty of an annual corporate festival lies in its own success. When the store team has experienced an edition they remember, the following year's bar is set by the guest, not the client. Every element of the new edition is measured against the piece already stored in their memory. If the format repeats, it reads as complacency. If the format changes too much, the implicit contract under which the attendee came back to the event is broken.

Added to that was an operational requirement specific to the retail sector. The annual convention of a mass consumer brand serves a specific commercial function: align the store network with the year's plan, present product, recognise the year's team, and return the workforce to the point of sale with energy for the strong campaign period. Any scenic or audiovisual intervention has to serve that business objective, not compete with it.

The commission, read plainly, was twofold. Maintain the festival identity the store team already recognised as their own. And build, within that identity, an experience the attendee could not anticipate from the previous edition.

Bacus's response

Same language, different choreography.

Bacus proposed preserving the festival DNA — converted warehouse, immersive zone-by-zone format, choreographed guest journey, large-format technical production — while completely changing the narrative script and artistic direction. The event maintained the brand promise the store team expected but was rewritten internally as a distinct piece: new visual line, new palette, new emotional curve through the journey, and new thematic stations inside the space.

Production was again executed in a converted logistics warehouse, the consolidated format for corporate festival projects of this scale in Barcelona. The scenic intervention again treated the industrial container as canvas: overhead structure for lighting and audiovisual rigging, internal zoning with freestanding scenic modules, circulation designed as an itinerary, and a central plenary zone for the event's formal blocks — company welcome, year plan presentation, recognition of the outstanding store team, corporate close.

Artistic direction worked with a visual line deliberately different from the previous edition. Where the prior festival had explored five geographic universes, the new script built a thematic progression that the attendee moved through as a sequence, not as an amusement park of parallel worlds. The editorial goal was that the guest, leaving the warehouse, could say two things at once: I recognised the festival I was expecting, and I saw something that was not there last year.

The experience

The store team enters the warehouse and recognises the festival without having seen it before.

The arrival at the warehouse reproduces the festival code the internal guest already expects: signposted access control, brand welcome, a gathering zone before the plenary, and collective voltage rising as capacity fills. The store team arrives from across Spain, reconnects with colleagues from other delegations not seen during the commercial year, and enters convention mode before crossing the door of the main hall.

The formal block — management welcome, year plan presentation, store and team recognition, corporate messages — is resolved in the central plenary with large-format audiovisual production and scene direction adjusted to script. Networking blocks and the festival experience are worked in the thematic zones of the itinerary. The guest's curve is designed so that the evening's close leaves the attendee with campaign energy, not the exhaustion of a working day.

The key difference from the previous edition is perceived without anyone announcing it. The attendee recognises the festival format as the brand's own, and at the same time registers that the piece is not the same. That double reading — brand continuity and editorial novelty — is the underlying result of the event.

The result

The returning client is the strongest signal of operational quality.

The edition closed without the award pressure of the previous event. The objective of this production was not to win two more metals at the industry convention, but to consolidate the client as a recurring account and demonstrate that the festival format withstands the test of repetition. It did. MediaMarkt kept Bacus as its lead agency for corporate conventions, and the relationship with the brand continued as one of the studio's most significant accounts in the retail sector.

For the agency's commercial reading, the verifiable editorial fact is that: a mass consumer brand with weight in the Spanish market returns to Bacus after an industry-awarded edition. In the corporate convention business in Barcelona, there is no stronger letter of recommendation than that.

Frequently asked questions · MediaMarkt Festival

What readers ask after this case.

  • A convention in corporate festival format is an annual event for staff or a commercial network that combines the formal blocks typical of a convention — plenary, year plan, recognition, management messages — with an immersive zone-by-zone experience, large-format audiovisual production, and a choreographed guest journey. It makes sense for mass consumer brands, retail, and large distribution companies that need to align large teams while returning them to the point of sale with campaign energy. Barcelona concentrates convertible logistics warehouses, technical supplier infrastructure, and national connectivity suitable for this format.

  • The budget for an annual consumer brand convention in a converted warehouse in Barcelona depends on capacity, venue floor area, scenic complexity, required audiovisual production, and the number of content blocks. Bacus operates this format in the upper-mid range of the professional market and works each project to brief — number of attendees, date, the event's commercial objective, and the client's brand positioning. Starting the process four to six months in advance is recommended to secure the venue, production team, and technical supplier calendar.

  • In the annual convention business, the recurring client is the strongest indicator of operational quality. A mass consumer brand only repeats an agency when the previous edition worked on three levels simultaneously: technical execution without incidents, measurable internal return with the store team, and a professional relationship aligned with the client's culture. When a Barcelona retail events agency accumulates several consecutive editions with the same brand, it demonstrates that the format sustains itself over time and that the production withstands the annual test of repetition.

  • Yes. Bacus operates as the lead agency for recurring annual conventions of mass consumer, retail, and distribution brands, with full production in Barcelona, Madrid, and the rest of Spain. The standard format combines a corporate plenary, a zone-by-zone immersive experience, large-format audiovisual production, and unified scene direction. The agency's philosophy — concept, scenography, audiovisual, and artistic direction worked internally as a single editorial piece — makes it possible to maintain brand coherence across successive editions without falling into replication.
